Knimes

Componist en producer Knimes laat zich lastig in één hokje plaatsen. De continue reis, waarbij het experimenteren met ritmes en klanken centraal staat, is van invloed op zijn muzikale richting en daarom niet zelden genre-overstijgend. Een gezonde dosis eigenzinnigheid en de sterke behoefte om te improviseren, vormen samen met zijn vaardigheden als drummer het raamwerk van die verkenningen. Het resultaat is de documentatie van zijn voortdurende muzikale avonturen!

Met zijn nieuwe album Adventures in Improvised Music vervult knimes een lang gekoesterde wens om zijn composities op te nemen en uit te brengen op vinyl. Hiervoor startte hij de Acoustig Group, die bestaat uit Jose Minguez op altsaxofoon, Yiannis Marinos op trombone, Ingnacio Santoro op contrabas en hijzelf op drums. Als drummer met een achtergrond in jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek, was hij altijd al gefascineerd door akkoordloze trio-opnamen zoals Sonny Rollins 'Live At The Village Vanguard, Spiritual Unity van Albert Ayler en Kenny Garretts' Triology. Hoewel zijn akoestische groep oorspronkelijk als trio begon, leidde de interesse voor het bijzondere geluid van de trombone tot een geslaagd experiment in kwartetbezetting met de opnames in deze samenstelling als natuurlijk vervolg.

Als een fervent vinylverzamelaar, tevens een belangrijke reden voor een release op dit medium, nam Knimes in de loop der jaren veel muziek tot zich en werd hij zich steeds bewuster van de belangrijke rol die de sound van oudere jazzopnamen heeft op het genre zelf. Zonder te proberen diezelfde sound te reproduceren, is er speciale aandacht besteed om dat aspect te vertalen naar een hedendaagse opname.

En nu, een jaar nadat de opnames plaatsvonden, komt het album op 9 april uit tijdens een release concert in het Haagse Theater & Filmhuis Dakota in samenwerking met ProJazz.

Genre blurring composer and producer Knimes is the sort of artist who never neatly fits into any one box, and most likely never will. The music he makes is heavily influenced by his ongoing journey, exploring rhythms and sounds. His willfullness and strong need to improvise, together with his skills as a drummer, shape his sonic explorations.

The result is the documentation of his continuous adventures in music.

With his new album Adventures in Improvised Music, Knimes fulfills a long-standing desire to record his original compositions and release the album on vinyl. For this he started the Acoustig Group, which consists of Jose Minguez on alto saxophone, Yiannis Marinos on trombone, Ingnacio Santoro on double bass and Knimes himself on drums. As a drummer with a background in jazz and improvised music, knimes has always been fascinated by chordless trio recordings like Sonny Rollins’ Live At The Village Vanguard, Spiritual Unity by Albert Ayler and Kenny Garretts’ Triology, to name a few.

Although he originally started his acoustic group as a trio, his interest for the trombone and its unique sound led to experimenting in a quartet setting and ultimately recording with this group. As an avid vinyl collector, explaining the reason for a release on this medium, Knimes took in a lot of music over the years and began to understand how important the sound of the older jazz recordings was to the genre itself. Without trying to recreate or even emulate the sound of older recordings, special attention has been paid to capture that element in a contemporary recording.

And now, one year after the recordings took place, the album will be released on April 9th during a release concert at the Dakota Theatre & Filmhouse in collaboration with ProJazz
