    Sairat (Wild)

Indian Film Festival in Dakota: Sairat!

'Sairat' is het harde doch hartverwarmende verhaal van twee tieners in het achterland van Maharashtra, Parshya and Archie. Hun liefde overbrugt bijna alle obstakels, maar de toorn van de samenleving staat hun relatie toch in de weg. Hoewel alle elementen van massavermaak aanwezig zijn, neemt de film ook sociale en politieke problemen en de hypocrisie van de Indiase samenleving kritisch onder de loep, op een manier die je nog lang na de aftiteling zal bijblijven.

Set in the hinterland of Maharashtra, Sairat is a heart-warming yet hard-hitting tale of two teenagers, Parshya and Archie, who love each other against all odds but face the societal wrath that prevents the young lovers from taking their relationship forward.

Parshya is a common boy from a lower middle class family, as determined by their income and thousands of years of caste politics. Archie is the daughter of the local political leader, a bold girl from a rich background who says what she thinks and does what she wants. Parshya falls in love with Archie, but the gap between their societal statuses are too wide to be bridged. But as Archie eventually discovers that Parshya is more important to her than anything else she ever had or wanted, she goes ahead and reciprocates. The two meet, fall in love, but what happens next is not like one of those stories of star-crossed lovers that happily live ever after. The other half of the story would haunt you for days.

Although Sairat has all the elements of a mass entertainer, Nagraj Manjule has taken the bold step in letting us take a critical look at the socio political issues and hypocrisies of the Indian society. This is the birth of a new talent and an exceptional voice that doesn't come around very often, and we can't ignore it. You owe it to yourself to experience the beauty, exaltation, and pain that Sairat has to offer.
